At just a short ride away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Rio you’ll find the beautiful Bohemian district of Santa Teresa which is Rio's answer to the Parisian Montmartre.

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Be artsy as you lap up the amazing artwork and curious culture in this pretty place
* Check out the rich history hiding in Carioca Square
* Set your eyes on the stunning masterpiece: Selaron's Staircase

We start off by getting around town like the locals as we head underground. Jump on the last tram line in Rio de Janeiro and ride the Rio subway to get a much needed brief introduction to the city. We'll hop off at Carioca Station so we can roam around the Financial District which is home to some huge companies. Marvel at Carioca Square which was once the main source of drinking water in Rio when it was transported in over the Aqueducts of Lapa. After that, we'll climb aboard the tram for the trip to Santa Teresa. This is the only remaining tram line in Brazil that is used solely as a means of transport.

Hopping off at Largo dos Guimaraes, it's time to explore! We'll wander about on foot and come across art galleries, restaurants and local dress that just screams Santa Teresa! It sits high on a hill overlooking Rio and it’s able to enchant locals and visitors time and time again with its quaint cobbled streets and eclectic exhibits of flawless architecture. The views of the city centre and the bay from up here aren't too shabby either.

Previously dominated by the elite, it has been transformed into a cultural hub which is jam-packed full of resident artists. We will go along to Ruins Park to get a gorgeous view over downtown Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay. On our way back towards the Lapa District we get a chance to see the local convent which lends its name to the most talked about carnival performance “Bloco das Carmelitas”. We end on a high note with a stop at Selaron's Staircase. This iconic piece is one of the late artist's most well-known.
