Kitzbühel... the most legendary sports town in the Alps, in winter and in summer.

With its many famous mountains such as the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Hahnenkamm, the pretty town of Kitzbühel is home to one of Austria's most famous ski races. At the same time, the region also has plenty of other highlights such as via ferrata fixed-rope climbing trails and a fascinating mining museum.
Located in the heart of the Alps, between the mighty Kitzbüheler Horn and the Hahnenkamm, Kitzbühel is without a doubt one of Austria’s most famous ski resorts. This village in the east of Tirol is popular with visitors throughout the year thanks to its picturesque old town, fine local cuisine and pedestrianised shopping area with many boutiques, cafés, bars, cinemas and a casino. In short, there are few places anywhere which combine traditional country life and modern urban living with such grace and charm as Kitzbühel, whose fabulous ski resort is frequently voted one of the best in the world.

Away from the twinking lights of Kitzbühel itself, the surrounding region with villages such as Reith bei Kitzbühel, Aurach und Jochberg also has plenty to offer. During the warm summer months it draws many mountainbikers and hikers keen to explore the mountains. Highlights in Reith include the Bichlach recreation area, a golf course and the "Gieringer Weiher", a naturally warm moorland lake. Other attractions and points of interest are like the Aurach animal and the "Kupferplatte" mining museum in Jochberg. Those who like being out and about in the mountains will appreciate the many via ferrata fixed-rope climbing trails catering for all abilities. The 3S cable car, which connects the Hahnenkamm and the Jochberg, operates all year round and floats higher above the ground than any other cable car in the world at 400 metres. In the winter months there is a large network of cross-country skiing and winter hiking trails in Reith, Aurach and Jochberg.

This medieval silver-mining centre, with its heavily buttressed walls and delicate painted frescoes, rightly deserves its reputation as the most beautiful ski town in Europe. The pedestrianised Vorderstadt, the town centre inside the heavy old city walls, is set against a backdrop of the jagged teeth of the spectacular Wilder Kaiser Mountains. Old coaching inns now converted into four- and five-star hotels vie for space in the ancient streets alongside smart fashion boutiques and wickedly expensive cafés.

Take a single glance at the designer and fur-clad clientèle that browses in shop windows while never quite making it to the mountain, and you’ll soon decide that Kitzbühel is the ritziest resort in Austria. But despite this diamond-studded image, the cost of a stay here can be pleasantly surprising. Even at the top end of the tree, prices fail to reach anywhere near the stratospheric heights of Courchevel or Zermatt.

Kitzbuehel Alps

The towns and villages of Kitzbuehel, Aurach, Jochberg and Reith are the most popular places for sporting events in Tyrol and in the Kitzbuehel Alps. The range of sports facilities here is endless. The numerous international events held here make Kitzbuehel number one.

Many visitors to our region have extended their holiday, with some deciding to remain here permanently. The combination of friendly people and stunning mountain scenery give Kitzbuehel a distinct advantage when competing to win the, “Best of the Alps” title that is awarded each year.

Kitzbühel is a small medieval town situated in the Kitzbühel Alps along the river Kitzbuhler Ache in Tyrol, Austria, about 100 kilometers(62 mi) east of the state capital Innsbruck and is the administrative centre of the Kitzbühel district (Bezirk). Kitzbühel is a ski resort of international renown and its ski season lasts from mid October to early May. During winter and early spring it is frequented primarily by upper-class clientele from Austria and from abroad.

Places of interest:

  • St. Catherine's Church: built 1360–1365, High Gothic church in the heart of the town with a coppersmith altar; the high tower with its spire is a striking landmark in the town centre. Its carillon sounds at 11 am and 5 pm.
  • Protestant Christ's Church in Kitzbühel: built in 1962 by Clemens Holzmeister
  • Reisch Dance Cafe: built in 1928 by Lois Welzenbacher (architect of the Tiroler Moderne);
  • Berghaus Holzmeister, a guesthouse on Kitzbühel's local mountain, the Hahnenkamm; built in 1930 by Clemens Holzmeister
  • Fresco by Max Weiler (1951) in Kitzbühel Primary School (Volksschule)
  • Newly built tri-cable system by the firm of Doppelmayr, the cable car with the highest elevation above the ground (400 metres (1,300 ft)) in the world.
  • Museum Kitzbühel - Collection Alfons Walde: the new renovated museum presents the history of the town, from 1000 years ago to the winter sports era; it also includes a larger permanent exhibition of the Tyrolean painter Alfons Walde
