Bansko is located in the south-western part of Bulgaria, 160 km away from the capital of Bulgaria – Sofia, 6 km from the town of Razlog and 96 km from the regional center Blagoevgrad. The city lies on the two banks of the Glazne River and right at the footsteps of Pirin Mountain, just below the highest peaks of the mountain.
The contemporary town of Bansko is a unique mixture of old traditions and modern style, where new hotels and apartment houses are separated from more than 100 years old ethnographic houses by just a tiny, stone-paved streets. Because of the unique architecture and the many attractions the town center is listed as a World Heritage Site. The Holy Trinity Church and especially its tall belfry have become a symbol of Bansko as one of the most attractive mountain resorts, successfully combining the charm of its rich historical past and its picturesque location at the foot of the mighty Pirin Mountain with the most modern facilities for recreation – a wide choice of reputable hotels for all tastes and budgets, one of the best ski zone in South-East Europe.
The Museum House “Nikola Vaptsarov” is the first museum in Bansko and one of the first museums in the Pirin region. The museum is located in the center of Bansko, next to the central square and near the municipality.
Velyan’s House in Bansko is located near the Holy Trinity Church and the central square of the town. The house is an example of the architectural style – fortified house of the Bulgarian Revival Period. Velyan’s House was built in the 18th century and was opened to visitors in 1977.
Paisiy Hilendarski monument is located on the Vazrajdane square in Bansko. It is supposed that the the place where the monument was erected is where Paisiy’s house was once located. The monument was created in 1976 by the sculptor Stoycho Todorov.
Because of the unique biodiversity and spectacular natural formations of Pirin, the Government of Bulgaria has established over 40,000 ha of mountain protected area – Pirin National Park. It is a piece of nature that is a priceless Bulgarian and world heritage and is included in UNESCO’s “Man and the Biosphere” program.
