There is so much to discover in Riga.

The first, indelible impression that most visitors get of the Latvian capital is its majestic skyline, as viewed from the left bank of the Daugava River. The slender Gothic spires of the Old Town’s many churches attest to the city’s long history, which stretches back to the 13thcentury. The panorama’s pleasing harmony is just the most visible indication of the superb aesthetic sense that has shaped much of the city’s architecture up to the present day. Nowhere is that aesthetic more pronounced than in Centre, the central part of Riga, which is the city’s economic, financial and cultural core, as well as a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site

One will find a breathtaking range of architectural styles in the historical centre – from Baroque to Classicism, from Renaissance to Art Deco, from Romanesque to National Romanticism. Furthermore, Riga’s wealth of Jugendstil or Art Nouveau buildings, complete with their fantastically ornate flourishes, stands out as unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Yet equally unique are the many 19th-century wooden buildings that have proudly withstood the pressures of commercialization and gentrification, retaining their place in Riga’s architectural cornucopia and currently undergoing state-of-the-art facelifts. But Riga is much more than just its history.
Proud of its heritage, it is a thoroughly modern city with a highly developed infrastructure and opportunities for a variety of activities and entertainment. A city with rich musical traditions, today it boasts an excellent opera, several worlds- class choirs and outstanding classical orchestras, not to mention jazz, rock and blues ensembles, plus a variety of other popular music bands performing in both concert halls and clubs.

Not only does Riga have the highest concentration of art nouveau buildings anywhere in the world, but on top of that, it has a beautiful, charming Old Town, dotted with cobbled streets and full of cosy bars and restaurants. It is also home to the biggest indoor market in Europe: Riga's Central Market. These massive hangars were used to host mega zeppelins during the thirties, and are an art deco and neoclassicism masterpiece. As one of the fastest developing countries in the European Union, many young people are starting new and hip projects all over town, but keeping the authentic atmosphere which makes Riga so special. Old soviet buildings turn into ateliers, workshops, and cafes, resulting in an interesting combination of the old and the new.

Riga introduces itself through eyes of five natives with their different passions. Even though their paths might cross, they each have their own way through Riga. By learning these diverse stories you will get to know how contrasting Riga is and how every day here can taste, look, sound and feel different. There are no limits - be anything in Riga!

The biggest metropolis in the Baltics, Riga perfectly blends timeless tradition and cutting edge cool. Drop in and get energized by a city with surprises on every road and rooftop.

A Nordic blonde with a fiery heart, there’s much more to Riga than meets the eye. In its 800 years of turbulent history, everyone from German knights to Swedish kings and Soviet commissars have left their footprints, and today Latvia’s capital is an exciting European metropolis at the crossroads of eastern and northern Europe.

Riga is an adventure for the taste buds too. The enormous Central Market is a treasure trove of earthy sausage, cheese and black bread, smoked fish, and much more. Sample the goods on a picnic in one of Riga’s lovely parks, or enjoy a hearty meal in many great value bistro and cafes.

To wash it down, sample intriguing local beers in the brew pubs along hipster strip Miera iela, or a cocktail with the mysterious Riga Black Balsam in fun-filled bars across town.

This city of 700,000 has enough to keep you busy for days, but it’s also compact enough for easy daytrips to the beautiful Latvian countryside.

Explore the natural paradise of Sigulda with its fairytale castles, romantic vistas and adventure sports, stroll along miles of pine-fringed sandy beaches in the seaside playground Jurmala, and marvel at the Baroque and Rococo splendor of Rundale Palace.

Riga is famous for its Old Town and city center (Centrs), in which over 800 buildings are of the Art Nouveau (aka Jugendstil) style of architecture. The old town of Riga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Art Nouveau style involves intricate building facades, with carvings of flowers and mythological creatures, and ornate doorways and windows. Much of the old town was either destroyed by fire or destroyed by the Germans in World War II and remained in ruins until it was rebuilt in the late 1990s, mainly to make Riga attractive as a tourist destination.

Riga is also popular due to its nightlife and discount airlines that offer cheap flights to/from much of Europe.

Riga is bisected by the river Daugava. Old (medieval) town is in the center of the city on the east side of the river. It is surrounded by a ring of ~19th -- early 20th century architecture, followed by a mix of private 2-floor house districts (many also pre-WW2) and Soviet-era 5-18 floor apartment districts, with an occasional factory (especially near railroad lines). The term "centre" loosely refers to quite a large area around Old town limited by the river to the west, the railroad lines to the east and south, and without a definite boundary to the north.
