It might not be an island, but with miles of unspoiled beaches unfurling in front you, Khao Lak has all the best parts of a deserted island escape – without the high costs or sacrificed material pleasures. The chance to pack a picnic and find a your own plot of paradise – just the crash of the waves, a few scurrying crab, and that special someone – is very much a reality. While each beach has ample supplies of the ‘big three’ – sun, sand, and surf – they also have minor differences in personality. We’ve done the tough work of inspecting every last one, but that shouldn’t stop you from doing the same; second opinions are always valuable in matters of extreme importance.
Khao Lak is a ~20 km stretch of lovely beaches along the Andaman Sea coastline set against a backdrop of jungle-covered mountains. The region is dotted with numerous resorts and tourist facilities.Monks on the beach, Khao Lak
The name Khao Lak translates as Lak Mountain. The mountain is the centerpiece of Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park. The headland formed as the mountain plunges into the sea near the southern end of the Khao Lak roughly marks the southern boundary of the Khao Lak region.
The attractions of Khao Lak are impressive and many, but they are not flashy. The expanses of lovely uncrowded parks, mountains, roads, and beaches, relatively unspoiled nature, easy access to great off-shore diving, accommodations ranging from luxury to basic, and an infrastructure that supports western tourism, but not at the expense of local customs or the Thai way of life, appeal to an increasing number of visitors.
Compared with a place like Patong, Khao Lak can seem boring, especially during low season (April-November). If exotic nightlife and its associated attractions are the reason you’ve come to Thailand, Khao Lak is probably not the place for you. On the other hand, it’s an excellent vacation spot for people seeking to get off the treadmill, for family getaways, and for nature-lovers.
When people refer to Khao Lak, they're usually talking about a series of white-sand beaches hugging Phang-Nga's west coastline, backed by forested hills, about 70km north of Phuket. With easy day trips to the Similan and Surin Islands, Khao Sok and Khao Lak/Lam Ru National Parks, or even Phuket, the area is a central, kick-back base for exploring the northern Andaman.
Southernmost Hat Khao Lak gives way to Hat Nang Thong, making up a beach for those who shun the glitz and cheesiness of Phuket’s bigger resort towns, but still crave comfort, shops and plenty of facilities. Khao Lak proper (Khao Lak Town), a jumble of restaurants, tourist markets and low-rise hotels along grey Hwy 4, is bland but convenient; you’ll probably spend your days further afield.
About 2.5km north, Hat Bang Niang is a quieter version of sandy bliss with skinnier beaches. Hat Pakarang and Hat Bang Sak, 12km to 13km north of Hat Khao Lak, are a sleepy, unbroken sandy stretch surrounded by thick mangroves, rolling pasture and rubber-tree plantations forming a wide buffer between the coast and highway. You'll feel like you’ve really escaped it all here.
The Resort itself spawns from an elevated position on the lower part of Khaolak hill and gently slope onto the 400 meters long beachfront. You can take an evening stroll along the golden beach, with the occasional boulder rising from the fine sandy surface, and enjoy the peaceful view of the sunset, accompanied by the gentle background sound of the lapping waves.
All the hotel's restaurants are also ideally situated for you to enjoy a splendid view of the sea. At Moracea by Khao Lak Resort tries to bring you into a world that is closest to "Paradise on Earth"
